Re: Analog meter driver...

dbx used to make a nice stand alone meter with a huge dynamic range. If you combine the rms detector with a VCA configured as a 2:1 compressor, you will square the meter range, or double in dBs. While reading -90dB with a mechanical meter is a little questionable.

Re: A Direct-Coupled Input-Capacitorless Active Mic Preamp

Some of that expense is due to component choices. I have though about applying something like this to a console where you could have common high voltage PS and perhaps other economies of scale. In my mind it's still a little scary since it would cost more for a mostly intangible benefit, with the po...

Re: A Direct-Coupled Input-Capacitorless Active Mic Preamp

I haven't thought about this for a while but mic designers make me nervous.. I've had a few conversations with them over the years and they make assumptions about mic preamps just like we do about mics. There should be ways to deal with any potential error source as long as we can anticipate what th...

I am also appreciative of Wayne's work in this area. This has long been an interest of mine and a logical follow up to eliminating all unneeded sources of nonlinearity from critical audio paths.

Re: Servo-Related Baseline Shifts Seen In Soundfiles

That leading burst doesn't look like a simple acoustically generated waveform, either a gated source, or perhaps a synth. In fact the start at a zero crossing looks like synth, while I have designed a burst gate for bench work that senses zero crossings most audio gates don't.

DC happens.

Re: Starting point

When I was in the steep part of my learning curve I would devour schematics, and things like the ideas for design in engineering magazines. After a while I found the ideas for design too trivial and moved onto more esoteric stuff. I would suggest picking a schematic and trying to figure it out. For ...

Re: Starting point

I am basically self taught and have also longed for such a book, especially when the end of the chapter shows me a schematic of the design I'm trying to accomplish. Unfortunately for me life isn't that neat. First I would ask how deep do you want to get into design? if you want to dig all the way do...

You know I had forgotten that there was a three character minimum. I think that's the default. That explains the period after JR.

Re: Hey guys, good to be here.

real names are good,, one of the other forums I participate on insists on real names.

It keeps people a little more accountable. They have caught several people using fake names to spin discussions about products.
