Re: Heathkit is Back!

From the original article: By 1992 they had abandoned the kit business, and lived on as an educational company, trading on their expertise developed via the kit assembly manuals, which were widely praised for being brilliantly clear. Indeed, many folks with no electronics background built the kits, ...

Re: Evolution and Origin of the SuperBal Variable Gain Input

Thanks John. In your gain stage the only interaction i could imagine is if a DC blocking cap was used in series between the input stage and the gain stage (like to prevent clicks from the polarity switch). Fortunately the DC gain of stage two remains unity regardless of the pot setting so the click ...

Heathkit is Back! Or, is it?

http://www.eetimes.com/discussion/break-points/4219631/Heathkit-returns-?cid=NL_PlanetAnalog&Ecosystem=analog-design http://www.heathkit.com/ I noticed while remodeling the house that the Heath company had started selling wired and wireless doorbells. That Heath company, related to the old one i...

Re: Evolution and Origin of the SuperBal Variable Gain Input

Thanks Doug. And thanks to you ricardo, JR and Paul. Any recommendations on Variable Gain Balanced I/Ps? I'll even forgo equal signal currents in each leg. Sure I'll take a stab at it. I just don't think you can do much better than this. It doesn't get any simpler IMHO. https://www.ka-electronics.co...

Re: Evolution and Origin of the SuperBal Variable Gain Input

I said I'm not trying to be a killjoy. Just trying to get expert opinion on the subject which you have now amply provided. You can't tell by now that I'm clueless? I'm not sure I've found any pearls yet :D I think you will find with CGO caps & 1% resistors from the same batch you will have MUCH...

Re: Residential Lighting with LEDs: Retrofitting the Pink Ra

Home Depot are now stocking the 75W equivalent Philips AmbientLED 17W lamp. It provides 1100 lm.

I'll check a local store. For now it may be web-only.

Re: Evolution and Origin of the SuperBal Variable Gain Input

Well slightly more expensive. About 1.22X compared to a single 1246. The 1286 is $1.98 at 1K. At 10K or 100K who knows... The 1246 is $1.62 at 1K. Compared to a dual op amp, not counting bypass C's and RFI common to both: One 1286 vs. 5532 and 9 or so passives. CMR 80 dB vs. 30-35 dB for 5532 and 1%...

Re: Evolution and Origin of the SuperBal Variable Gain Input

An Improved SuperBal Self's definition of a SuperBal is a fixed gain example, based on Birt, which has identical inverting and non-inverting load impedances. The "improved" SuperBal is also fixed gain and has identical inverting and non-inverting load impedances. That's about the only sim...

Re: Evolution and Origin of the SuperBal Variable Gain Input

I was impressed at the time because that quad cable was a relatively low cost change that delivered real performance benefits in practice. Yes it does. I remember some tests we did near dimmers. I think it was Canare and it was quite impressive and no more difficult to terminate. In making the elec...

Re: Evolution and Origin of the SuperBal Variable Gain Input

I previously wrote: The common mode impedance, due to cross-connection of the inputs, is identical on each input leg. Not true. It's the differential impedance that is equalized by cross-connection on each input leg. Does this matter? I don't know. We report, you decide. Jung and Birt seem to think ...
