Re: Holman, Dynamic Range Phono Preamplifiers, Audio July 19
In fact most High Trackability cartridges have too much compliance (see later) A non-intuitive point is that the compliance resonates with the tip mass, usually within the audio band so a lower compliance often helps trackability . I'm glad to see this in print. I have come to the same conclusion. ...

Re: Flat Phono Preamp Based on John's P10 and 2SK389
The noise spectrum of buzz and hum is very different from rumble, pops and ticks. I'd expect to easily hear improvements. A good record should have a noise floor of about -65dBu. I'm seeing that -65 dBu number and wondering how far above 0 dBu is the "overload" point. Or, IOW, what is the...

Re: Flat Phono Preamp Based on John's P10 and 2SK389
Looking good Wayne. This is something I've wanted for a long time. Seeing the measurements is enlightening. Pretty much confirms what I've suspected for a while. Reducing the hash that creeps into every setup will do far more to improve sound quality than another zero or two in the THD or noise floo...

From what I understand the laser turntables are not an unqualified success. I haven't used one but I've been told that they produce strange artifacts when they don't track properly. Worse than a good old cartridge.

Re: Flat Phono Preamp Based on John's P10 and 2SK389
I have been thinking about all the options and I keep seeing possibilities. Just like the MS board. If you want to use the preamp as reference playback it would be nice to have an insert jumper after the RIAA for EQ to flatten out cartridge response. This may be something very few people want but if...

Looks great Wayne. The only comment i would make is that I don't see a need for a separate monitor out and record out. If you are doing transfers you always want to monitor through and after the recording device to make sure the transfer is okay. I would rather see a consumer style parallel output.

Re: Tilt Equalizer
I guess I'm confusing matters by using the word tilt. I visualize "tilt" as meaning a control where, for example, you increase the low end and there is a simultaneous decrease in the high end or vice-versa. That is a Tilt EQ. You use a tilt EQ to make very broad changes of the frequency s...
