Gentle persuasion over time

Relax in southern comfort on the east bank of the Mississippi. You're just around the corner from Beale Street and Sun Records. Watch the ducks, throw back a few and tell us what's on your mind.

That pile of firewood already gone...
Take some Turmeric for that knee.
My knee's inflammation is pretty well managed, but the last few days have involved above average stress on that bad knee. I figure I lifted that entire tree 2 or three times after cutting it down into manageable chunks.

I am already taking real medicine (Naproxen Sodium), maybe medicine (glucosamine chronditin), and wishful thinking medicine (golden raisins soaked in gin). I have turmeric on my spice shelf and use it occasionally in recipes. A few months ago I experimented with using a topical anti-inflammation cream externally to reduce the risk from chronic NSAID use (linked to internal bleeding). My knee told me that the topical NSAID externally did not work as well as swallowing two naproxen daily, so I organize my internal dosing so I always take the medicine with at least some food in my gut.

My knee lets me know how its doing and right now it is telling me don't make a regular habit of lifting that much heavy stuff...

[edit to honor this request I added some turmeric into the crockpot meal I was cooking /edit]

In anticipation of spring, I am working on some more precision tree cutting... Yesterday I dropped one of two trees on my cut short list that were stealing sunlight from a productive pecan tree in my far back yard.

The pecan I am trying to rehab is in the center of the picture... to the left you can see the trunk with V shaped notch, and tree on the ground. This required some precision manipulation because I was concerned about it hanging up on, and damaging a major pecan tree branch it was growing up into. Using my come along I was able to first pull the tree off the stump dropping straight down, improving clearance for the pecan branch... then pulling it the rest of the way down at a safe angle. (I didn't lose one pecan branch,, so far). 8-)

The next drop target is a larger tree to the right.

From this different angle the tree that looks like it is in the middle is next... Before I can cut it I need to remove an old barbed wire fence that is tangled around it, then deal with a still wet muddy rain ditch. 25% chance of precipitation today but dry for now. I have a clear shot to pull it at an angle to the right, with a good tree in my back yard to anchor the come along too.

I am thinking of using the tree trunks to make a border for a raised bed garden with....

Sounds like a real good use for it.
I also use them for erosion control on slopes and trails.

I got the barbed wire moved out of the way... but weather is so nice I need to ride my bike for the first time in weeks.

So maybe today after my ride...

Chalk up another success for precision forestry.

I hope that pecan tree doesn't get lonely without it's sun stealing neighbors. You can see remains of the stumps on both sides.

I have too much wood for my raised bed garden but I'll get is sorted this weekend. I need to get more serious about where I'll put it.

I am soaking my bad knee in beer from the inside, and ice on the outside... it doesn't like me lifting heavy stuff (like trees).

Congratulations on the precision tree felling.

I always feel better when I'm sore from a hard day's work than just being sore from doing nothing.

I used to joke when I was still playing basketball that I appreciated having a good excuse for feeling sore the morning after... banging in the post was always good for a sore back...

My muscles are telling me that I need to do more work... maybe not the lifting that hurts my knee, but some kind of resistance exercise. I rode my bike this week and that was good.

Woke up in the middle of the night with cramping, so today I am taking more hydration breaks.

PS: The idiots caused a run on toilet paper and my local wally world was sold out. WTF do they think, we will run out of toilet paper? These same jerks want to elect a socialist, then we will run out of toilet paper. Maybe I should make TP from all my trees.

I was thinking about using some of the tree trunks to make a primitive raised bed garden... But I wimped out and purchased a cheap raised bed kit (fir not cypress) because who knows how long I will do it this way.
raisedbed.jpg
I harvested most of the top soil from my rain ditches... the closer raised bed in the picture has about a half wheel barrow load of compost from my compost pile. You can see the different color from all the coffee grounds.

Last year I trashed most of my seedlings/sprouts when I moved them outside, so this year I am doing it in stages... I moved one batch of tomato and pepper plants. So far almost 2 days later, they look like most survived the transplant.

I transplanted my one cucumber sprout and it appears alive too. March is a little early, but spring has definitely sprung... Weather forecast looks good for no more freezes.

JR

PS I didn't mark what I put where and the tomato sprouts and pepper sprouts look pretty similar. I guess they will reveal which is what soon enough.

I've got tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce and cabbage up.
All except the tomatoes were direct seeded.

My cauliflower transplants didn't make it.
