I love modern technology

Relax in southern comfort on the east bank of the Mississippi. You're just around the corner from Beale Street and Sun Records. Watch the ducks, throw back a few and tell us what's on your mind.

A benefit of living in the boonies while I am careful about aim because there are many houses within range in every direction. Most of my neighbors routinely shoot in their yards, typically 22 cal.

Two summers ago I had one tree rat who didn't leave the pecan branch even after I started shooting at him. He just kept eating as if he was in some kind of a feeding frenzy (or ill). Of course give me enough shots, I'll drop him, and I did.

I opened the new Gempler's catalog and it fell open to this page. I immediately thought of you JR.

It's against my house rules to shoot at birds but I have a couple perching on upper branches of my fig tree and leaving their deposits on lower leaves, that are tempting me to reconsider my rules.

I still haven't seen my squirrels in the same old places lately.

You just need to get one of those sound cannons or DIY your own.

Not only would that irritate my neighbors it would irritate me. I got loud noises out of my system in the military (during training).

JR

PS: Decades ago my step father had a carbide cannon that got pretty loud as I recall

Calcium carbide and water makes acetylene that then gets ignited by a flint.

From a search, about how to keep squirrels away.

Add metal tree collars to keep the squirrels out of your trees. Cut a thin piece of sheet metal with metal snips. Make it big enough to go around the tree and 3 feet (0.91 m) wide. Wrap it around the tree 6 feet (1.8 m) off the ground.

Have you ever seen squirrels in trees... ? Squirrels can jump from branch to branch between trees and travel decent distances without ever touching the ground.

Last year when I paid a tree guy to trim back my pine trees I reduced the squirrel's elevated highway but could not eliminate it completely.. My hope was that without a high road exit path, I could tree them and they would be stuck up in the trees for my ultimate solution.

I find my air rifle can be effective if/when I get clean shots. I killed about a half dozen tree rats over last few years, but haven't got a clean shot at one since dialing in my scope with the laser. Still too early in the season for them to be feeding on my pecans, but they are in the neighborhood. Early in the season they can feed on immature pine combs.

Sure, i know they escape jumping from trees to trees.
I had a dog, who never figured that out. The dog liked to run at a squirrel, that used to climb up a tree.
Then the dog was barking and waiting at this tree, for ages, not aware the squirrel was gone several trees away.
